Malika (Arabic name for Queen) went to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt as a teenager where she developed her love for the middle Eastern dance and culture. Upon returning to her birthplace of Los Angeles she further studied belly dance. After only one year she landed her first professional job at the Apadana in Newport Beach. She continued to perform at the Apadana for 2 years while performing in other clubs such as the Cascades and Andre’s in Orange County.
She returned to Hollywood and danced for 2 years 4 nights a week at Ali Baba’s on sunset followed by the fez, Khyam’s and several other Hollywood clubs. During that time she auditioned for the famous rock star Donavan for his comeback tour. She opened for his kickoff concert for the comeback tour at the Shrine Auditorium. In the same time frame she danced at the Monte Carlo room in Newport Beach opening for Marlo Thomas.
Her longest nightclub run was at the famous Persian club ‘Caberet Tehran’ in Studio City for almost 10 years. In that time she also danced at the other popular Persian club ‘Colbeh’ in Toluca Lake. She studied classical Persian dance and folkloric Persian dance and became very well known with the Los Angeles Iranian community for both belly dancing and Persian dance. She toured with famous Persian singers doing shows in Texas, Colorado, Utah and Oklahoma.
Malika then took a break to go back to Egypt to study Egyptian style Middle Eastern dance. Upon returning to Los Angeles she gave a very successful workshop for Egyptian style and Persian dance.
She continued dancing in clubs and doing weddings, parties, shows, and Persian TV on channel 18.
She also danced overseas in Amsterdam, Spain and Greece. After returning from her last tour in Greece she put together a group of three professional dancers and named the group Kereshme’ which is the name for the classical Persian dance. They performed at the Hollywood Palladium for Persian New Years in 1989. They did several other clubs and parties before returning to their individual demanding dance careers.
Throughout her dancing career she taught in her family owned private studio. Having a strong background in ballet, jazz and middle eastern dance, she taught classes in each dance field.
MALIKA'S BELLYDANCE CLASSES: After a break into a different career, MALIKA now teaches in her beautiful family owned studio surrounded by lush gardens and a spa atmosphere. Her classes are a combination of strong isolation technique, step breakdown and fun but challenging routines. She also can teach finger cymbals and elaborate veil technique for interested students. Malika has always had an ability to bring energy into the room and draw in the audience which carries over into her teaching. Her other dance studies have been flamenco and Ballroom dancing.
Her classes are taught in her private studio in North Hills (in between Van Nuys and Northridge).
