CLASSES: Nancy Young is a certified instructor of American Tribal Style (ATS) belly dance, teaching at her home studio, Sunroom Belly Dance, in Claremont, CA. Level 1: Dance Fundamentals (1 hour) ~ This 6-class series introduces dance posture, basic fast and slow steps, zils (finger cymbals), and group formations in which dancers take turns leading and following. Beginning ATS dancers should start with this series, even if they have studied other styles of belly dance. More experienced ATS dancers are also welcome and encouraged to attend Level 1 classes. If you want to master this beautiful dance form, you should repeat the Level 1 and 2 series several times.

ATS is a beautiful style of belly dance in which groups of women dance together improvisationally, using a shared vocabulary of movements. Nancy Young of Sunroom Belly Dance is a sister studio of Fat Chance Belly Dance.

BIO: Nancy began taking belly dance lessons in 2004, on the advice of a therapist at 54 years old with no prior dance training. Her first belly dance teacher was Shahira (Shannon Griffiths), an accomplished performer who offered classes at a community center in Claremont.

She took classes in American Tribal Style belly dance in January 2005. American Tribal Style is an artistic miracle. Its movement blends sensuality with elegant stateliness. Its costuming blends wild gypsy gorgeousness with modesty. For me, American Tribal Style belly dance is the ultimate expression of strong, dignified femininity.

It was developed by an artistic genius named Carolena Nericcio, director of FatChanceBellyDance, in San Francisco, California. Nancy's first ATS teacher was Kristin Ohman. Since October 2009 she has taken classes in Los Angeles with former FatChanceBellyDance troupe member Soy Pak. In addition to regular classes with teachers, she has seized every opportunity to study with Carolena Nericcio herself,taking most of the workshops she has given in Southern California since 2005; several classes at the FatChanceBellyDance studio in San Francisco; Tribal Pura in Santa Fe in 2006; Carolena's ATS General Skills certification courses in Highland in 2007, 2009, and 2010; and her ATS Teacher Training certification course in Highland in 2009.

Carolena granted me Sister Studio status in September 2009.
